  • Did more work on subjects and verbs from Langan. Learned that subjects can not be in prepositional phrases, that verbs can be one than one word, that sentences can have more than one subject and more than one verb.
  • Continued work in Kanar. Learned about monitoring your comprehension while you are reading.

Day 10, Start of Week 6

Today in Class
  • Turned in Kanar 2.4
  • Turned in Langan--482 (this is Langan Test 3).
  • We learned about skimming and scanning and did Kanar 2.5, 2.6, and 2.7 in class (did not have to turn this in). We also talked about the SCORE system.
  • We went over the answers to Langan Test 2 on fragments and Langan Test 3 on fragments.
  • We went through Langan 122-125. Did not turn in.
  • We played the C (correct) or R (run-on) game. Team "Left" (Jeff, Tina, Oliver) won. Good job!
  • We talked about what to do for the second drafts of Paragraph 2.
  • Wrote Journal 11: If you could take three people on a trip around the world, who would you take and why?

Day 8

Today in class
  • Wrote Journal 9: How is school going so far this semester? What is going well. What isn't going well?
  • Went over Langan Review tests 2 & 3 on pp. 116-117. We also did Langan 479 in class. We also did Langan Review Test 4 on p 118 and turned this in.
  • We talked about Paragraph 2, 1st draft which will be due on Thurs 2/14. For the first draft, start out by stating who you are writing about and what quality you will be writing (for example: My friend Joe is a helpful guy. Then in the second sentence, clarify (make clearer what you meant in the first sentence (for example: What I mean by helpful is that he is willing to assist people anytime and anywhere.). Then tell a story that shows your person with that quality.
  • Talked about the Kanar Chap 2 vocabulary words (see p. 35). The second vocab test will be on Thursday so study the Chap 2 words and the Chap 1 words to prepare for the test

Day 7

Today in Class
  • Turned in Kanar--Chap Quiz 5, pp 30-32
  • Went over Langan--103-104 on fragments. You did not neet to turn this in. We then talked about homework for next class.
  • Turned in Paragraph 1, final draft plus process stuff. If you lost or did not receive your checklist for the final draft, click here to get a copy. When you type out your final draft, it should look like this.
  • Did Article Sharing 4. Turned in written part of this (summary and reaction)
  • Began Chapter 2 in Kanar. We talked about SQ3R (see diagram at left).
  • Note that Vocab Test 2 will be next week Thursday 2/14. Study the 18 words from Chapters 1 and 2 of Kanar for the test.
  • Wrote Journal #7: If you were a teacher and you came to class and none of the students did their homework, what would you do?
  • We began work on Paragraph 2: List the names of 30 people that you know. Then list 20 positive personality characteristics (examples of these are honest, caring, helpful, hardworking...). We then did a web which looks like this.
Homework for Tuesday 2/12

  • Kanar--Do Exercise 2.1. Use the Langan textbook as the basis for your answers.
  • Langan--Do review tests 2 and 3 on pp. 116-117

Day 4

Today in class
  • I returned article sharing 1. Overall, everyone did a good job on this. For future article sharing write-ups, remember to include the titles of the article and the newspaper/magazine you got the article from.
  • I also returned paragraph 1 1st drafts. We talked about revising your first draft.
  • Journal entry 2: What was the best thing you ever read? What made it the best? and/or What is the best thing you ever wrote? What was it about and what made it so good?
  • Article sharing 2: Good discussion today. If you were absent or didn't have an article to share, there is always Article Sharing 3 and beyond. Join in. It's not so bad.
  • We did practice sentences on the board to determine who well you could ID subjects and verbs in sentences.
  • Begin in Kanar. We talked about the need to have a positive attitude about reading to be effective readers. We also talked about long and short term memory and how we need to take action to commit something we read to our long term memory.
HW for 1/31 Thurs
  • Article sharing 3: Remember that your summary has to be at least 75 words and your reaction at least 50.
  • Paragraph 1, 2nd drafts. Make sure your first sentence states the topic and opinion (your point). Make sure to emphasize your point in your details by repeating key words and using synonyms.
  • Kanar: Do exercises 1.2 and 1.3
  • Langan: Do Review Tests 1 & 2 on pp 97-98.
  • Vocab Quiz 1: Study words from page 4 in Kanar.

Day 3--Week 2 Begins

I hope you all had a good 3-day weekend.

Today in class, we did Journal Entry #1: Write about the story of Paragraph 1, 1st draft. That is, answer questions like where did you write it?, when did you write it?, how did you write it?, what did you have trouble with while writing it?, and whatever else you want to add. The entry must be at least 50 words to receive full credit.

Homework for Thursday 1/24
  • Buy and bring a composition book for Journal writing
  • Article sharing 2: Find an article, read it, write a summary of the article (75+ words) and reaction to the article (50+ words). Bring these to class and be prepared to share (talk) about the article with the class.
  • Langan: Do practice exercise that starts at the bottom of p. 95 and continues at the top of p. 96. Check your answers in the back of the book.
  • Kanar: Answer questions on pages 6-8. Check your answers in the back of the book.

Day 2

We talked about the four goals of effective writing today which are

  1. Have a point and state that point in what is called a topic sentence.
  2. Support the point with details such as facts, reasons, and examples.
  3. Organize (put in a logical order) the supporting details.
  4. Write error-free sentences.
We did our first article sharing today. Thank you to all those who read an article and shared it in class. Good job. For those who did not come prepared, make a note to yourself to be ready for the next article sharing day, which will be next Thursday.

Homework for 1/22 Tuesday
  • Article Sharing summary reaction: I gave out a handout to explain this. If you lost the handout or were absent, get it here.
  • Paragraph 1. The topic of the assignment is one thing you did on Saturday 1/12 or Sunday 1/13. The first draft will be due on and it should be one paragraph of at least 150 words. Make sure to strive to achieve all four goals of effective writing in your paragraph. The first draft can be handwritten. If you type it, I will give you bonus points.
  • Langan: Do Practice 3 on pp. 92-93 and Practice on p. 94. If you need help finding subjects and verbs, go here. Also, I suggest you take a look at this youtube video. It's funny and will help you understand subjects and verbs better. All this work is to get you ready for the first Langan test, which might be as soon as next Thursday 1/24.
